History and Geography: Blocked Creative Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed carefully to ensure at least National Curriculum coverage and progression in key skills.

At St Charles, we use a ‘Blocked Curriculum’ model for selected Foundation Curriculum Subjects. History and Geography  are taught as part of our Blocked Curriculum.

Overview of Blocked Curriculum at St Charles

Through blocking the curriculum  in these subjects, children receive a more focused and immersive learning experience; one which enables their knowledge to become more deeply embedded as part of our knowledge-led curriculum.

This helps to fosters deeper engagement and purpose for History and Geography tasks, giving children specific knowledge in these areas.

As a ‘reading school’, many of our History and Geography units drive linked literacy units; we ensure children have access to a wide range of high quality texts which support our themes and encourage love of reading.

To further support knowledge acquisition we use knowledge organisers with key information, facts and dates to help children remember and recall information linked to the topic. These are revisited frequently through a variety of different tasks and activities.

We provide a wide range of enrichment activities to support our curriculum, including trips visitors and local area studies to enhance the experience of the students in our care.

Further information on our History and Geography Curriculum ,  including the current topics,  can be found below and in the half-termly newsletters sent home to each class.

Our teaching of history will help pupils gain a secure knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
